What Is a Dual Diagnosis?
A dual diagnosis (co-occurring disorders) means you have a mental health disorder and substance use disorder at the same time. Co-occurring disorders are common. Many people use addictive substances such as drugs or alcohol to cope with the symptoms of psychiatric issues.
Some examples of co-occurring disorders include:
- Anxiety and prescription drug use
- Bipolar disorder and opioid use
- Depression and alcohol use
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol or drug use
- Schizophrenia and marijuana use
Specialized Dual Diagnosis Care at Arrowhead Behavioral Health
We treat co-occurring disorders simultaneously. We help you understand the relationship between mental health and addiction, allowing you to uncover the root cause of unhealthy habits and behaviors. This approach reduces the risk of relapse and helps more people achieve long-term recovery.
We draw on many evidence-based treatments to meet the unique needs of people with a dual diagnosis, including:
- Medical detox: We help you safely stop using drugs or alcohol and manage withdrawal symptoms. We may use medication-assisted treatment during detox.
- Trauma-informed therapy: Therapists encourage you to explore the impact of trauma on your life and how it contributed to addictive behavior.
- Group therapy: You benefit from sharing experiences with your peers, building bonds and developing communication skills.
- Psychoeducation: We offer workshops about nutrition, self-care, medication management, self-esteem and coping skills.
- Recreational therapy: You stay active throughout treatment. Recreational therapists offer art therapy, music therapy, yoga and fitness classes in our gym.
- Regular psychiatrist visits: You meet with a psychiatrist every 24 to 48 hours to discuss your treatment plan.
- Aftercare planning: We connect you to outpatient programs, medication clinics and other resources for continued recovery after discharge.
